Illustrator, Comics Maker, Storyteller . . . . My name is Mara Ramirez and I use they/them, any, and all pronouns. I teach both kids and adults, have similar approaches to both, and love both for different reasons :) I was mentored in the Emilia Reggio approach to teaching during my time at the San Francisco Children's Arts Center (and I wanted to be an art therapist growing up) which means I always center play and feeling good in my art lessons, for both kids and adults. Exploration based learning is the core of my curriculum, though I definitely like to add a bit more structure to my lessons as well. I create the boundaries for us to bounce off of. Classes with me entail not just technique or free time to draw, but interconnected conversations and slideshows that inform our studio practice. I like to bring in critical thinking whenever possible, and I try to inspire us conceptually as well as aesthetically.
I’ve been teaching arts with an emphasis in drawing and painting for the past 10 years. I’ve taught in a few different art studios for kids, as well as in public education programs for adult learning.
During my time as a teacher, I have worked privately 1:1 with people of all ages (2-seniors!) to create age appropriate, challenging, and engaging personalized learning plans, syllabi, and ongoing artistic relationships.
