Shilo Previti

Hello! My name is Shilo. I'm a writer and an instructor of writing. I was born near the marshy outskirts of noirish Atlantic City, NJ and raised in a cedar bog during a natural Pygmy Pines wildfire deep in the Pinelands reserve. I have held various jobs on the east coast, including teaching English in county jails, assisting with writing workshops for Murphy Writing, and moonlighting as a waitress & a newspaper deliveryman, but I have recently moved away from the sea to complete a graduate degree in English at the University of North Dakota. Welcome, and I look forward to writing with you.

Bio

I have a degree in Literature with a concentration in Literary Studies from Stockton University (2019) with minors in Ancient Latin, Philosophy, and Writing (creative). I have assisted Murphy Writing of Stockton University with their creative writing workshops and retreats, for four years, in a combination of face-to-face and online-only formats. I have taught eco-poetry workshops abroad (Greece, Cyprus), and I am currently pursuing a Masters in English at the University of North Dakota. In my freetime, when not reading or writing, I enjoy caring for my houseplants, gardening, hiking, and embroidery.

Students of any experience level and all diverse backgrounds will feel welcomed and respected in my classroom spaces. I have lived and worked in the northeast and the upper midwest of the United States, as well as abroad. I bring with me to my poetry workshop and feedback sessions all of my own eclectic life and travel experiences, as well as formal training in writing and the teaching of writing. You don’t have to be a “good writer” to participate in these workshops.

I offer mixed-genre courses, where we’ll explore the foundations of storytelling, imagery, voice, and more in various poetry and prose formats. But I’ll also offer more focused tutorials on poetry and memoir writing – some geared toward children and some geared toward adults, but either of which would be beneficial for beginning or experienced poets and writers. All courses will include free packets of master works to read and discuss, generative and challenging writing assignments, and valuable time for supportive, peer-critique and instructor feedback on drafts.
